Young Zee Scumbag

The charismatic, underground, former Outsidaz emcee Young Zee is back with a dope new release ‘Scumbag‘ produced and arranged by Melbourne, Australia producer Flu. Featuring Vinnie Paz, Pacewon, R and Rah Digga, the result is an incredibly unique, well crafted, hip hop album with witty wordplay and hella entertainment.

Flu provides a silky soundtrack for Young Zee to drop his maniacal mastery of vocabulary, which captivates you with every track. Zee’s flow is an acquired taste for some, but if you dig it (think Danny Brown, Rigz and others) and can stomach his shock value rap (you can see where early Em sharpened his pen) then ‘Scumbag‘ is yet another quality hip hop offering, switching up from downright insane (Scumbag) to introspective and intelligent (Slave Son).

The features are on point (with a standout being Pacewon on STFU), but it’s definitely a Zee album. His carefully crazy delivery, almost hypnotizing the listener with his silky flow and sickly content. But, the biggest highlight has to be the production and arrangement of the project from Flu. It’s rare to hear underground hip hop moving away from the traditional dusty ‘boom bap’ sound, but Flu isn’t constrained by the same drums and snares. His ability to craft MUSIC, not just make beats gives this album the point of difference that is lacking for the most part in the hip hop scene.

Overall, this is a really fun and engaging listen. Young Zee is mesmerizing throughout and has you scratching AND shaking your head at the same time. Vinnie, Rah, Pace all deliver fantastic cameo features that add to the overall product, and Flu dominates the sublime score.
