One of Detroit’s finest emcees, who has already delivered some major flames in 2020 with ‘No Cosign Just Cocaine 3‘ has teamed up with Royalz to drop another heat stone. We caught up with Ty Farris earlier this year, and knew he had plenty more in the holster, and on this EP ‘The Road of a Warrior’ he’s locked and loaded yet again, delivering top tier lyricism over fire production, to delivered a wholesome hip hop offering.

This joint is seven tracks after the stellar use of Samuel L. Jackson’s quote from the 1994 cult classic flick ‘Fresh’, and each one of them features the easily-identifiable flow of Farris – crisp and purposeful. The only features appear on ‘The Black Rose‘ in the form of Bub Rock and Rim – and they are well placed and relevant, but otherwise the EP is all about Ty doing what he does best.

A soulful narrative takes shape on ‘No Problem‘, while the solemn ‘Show Aggression‘ has a haunting yet hard vibe, with that Farris introspective narration. ‘Hustling in the Bloodstream‘ is a low-key, braggadocio track which has such authenticity over lounge-music keys. ‘The Operation‘ has a horn feature which just delivers me onto a Quentin Tarantion movie-set with Ty dropping jewels over the top. The title track ‘The Road of a Warrior‘ is perfectly placed as the bookend to this EP. Another semi-cautionary tale, with a host of meaningful metaphors – this sums up the artist that is Ty Farris.

Very few emcees are as hard working as Ty, yet he still flies under the radar. While he isn’t as mainstream as other Detroit rappers, he could body the majority of them and always, ALWAYS delivers a high quality product. He has an epic ear for beats as shown with this joint, but he also has the ability to delivered a range of subject matter with the ‘realness’ others can only claim.

Score: 8 / 10. A change of pace and an intricate EP. The project overall is a massive win and showcases the fact Farris should always be in the mix when talking about top tier emcees – especially underground ones. Royalz delivers the perfect aural canvas which rounds out a really solid if not short release.
