Spit Gemz Home School

Let’s talk about it. Spit Gemz is not only one of the best lyricists in the game, he’s not just one of the most talented artists and he doesn’t just make dope hip hop…. Gemz is an intelligent, unapologetic emcee who cares not for the constraints of society, but rather takes it back to the rawest roots of hip hop with intelligent bars, uncensored social commentary all paired with ferociously focused flow and handpicked beats that bang.

Home School, Gemz’ latest offering, is all of this and more wrapped up in on hell of a hip hop release that needs to be experienced to be believed. Spit Gemz has continued his ascension as one of the illest in the game through sheer hard work and dedication and an authenticity to the craft that is relatively unmatched. Transitioning from Broken Home to Home School not only shows that evolution, but it also shows that maturity and growth as a man and as an emcee, while delivering meaty hip hop that sticks to the ribs (clever play on the RIBS – Rikers Island Boxing School!).

The album kicks off with the ferocious ‘Bone Tomahawk’ which sees Gemz just absolutely kick things off by going for the jugular. A one minute barfest that frames the rest of the album. This might just be my favourite track because it’s real, it’s raw and it is FIERCE. ‘Think Wait Fast’ was the first single from the album and is a conscious track with Gemz dropping jewels on listeners over a dusty, boom bap beat complete with haunting vocals and soundbytes. ‘Industrial Revelation’ was the second single we peeped back a month or so ago, with it’s computer-game soundtrack style production and ‘beware of the devil’ intel while ‘Invisible Leashes’ slows the tempo a little and brings a bit of soul / jazz into the mix. The keys highlight the production while Spit Gemz provides a lyrical synopsis of the current social landscape in an aptly titled joint.

Siege Perilous’ brings a more upbeat vibe and evokes some of those Wu Tang ‘Gravel Pit’ kinda vibes but still delivering poignant prose such as ‘a smoking gun loaded by the verbal one percenters’. The title track ‘Home School’ is a banger, complete with the heavier drums on the track with a sharp edge. Gemz is relentless and pairs with frequent collaborators Eff Yoo and Aye Wun to drop a monster of a joint. ‘Elevated’ is a slick, street tale with a new verse from Prodigy that is scorching hot. Gemz and P have a killer chemistry over this grimy number which has hip hop heads wondering ‘what if’ these two had made more music together…. As a bonus we get ‘Mercy of the Dice’ which once again we already covered a week or so ago, but it fits with the vibe of the album so is a very welcomed inclusion.

Overall, Spit Gemz is unlike many other artists out there. He isn’t chasing streams, views, clout – hell, he ain’t even playing the game. He’s pouring all his energy and all of himself into his craft and Home School is a class-leading offering that should be used as a reference point for any student of the game. It’s real, it’s authentic and it’s fire. Gemz has a knack for choosing terrific beats, works with great minds for his features and crafts an album with care and purpose.

Bangers: Home School, Bone Tomahawk, Elevated, Invisible Leashes.

Score: 10 / 10. A high distinction for Spit Gemz who once again delivers hip hop of the highest quality. This album has huge replay value, not just because of the quality lyrical content and the complex messaging that has you spinning things again and again, but because it’s dope hip hop that educates while entertaining. And Spit Gemz is simply so masterful on the mic, that you are compelled to listen.
