SnowGoons Renaissance Kings

Hip hop heads LOVE the SnowGoons and we are no different! Having made hip hop anthems since 2007, they have been a staple in the culture and during this pandemic, they have upped the ante dropping a series of ‘1st of Da Month‘ singles featuring a varied lineup of artists and sounds, and 2022 has also seen their latest album ‘Renaissance Kings‘ drop and stay firmly in our headphones and playlists. It’s been a couple of weeks since it’s release, but even after a dozen listens, this album still slaps. The diverse range of boom bap styled production, the plethora of kick ass feature artists and the overall feel of the project means this one has some meat on the bones and is going to be digested for more than a minute.

We already heard ‘We Up‘, ‘Word On The Street‘ and ‘Levitation‘ etc before the album dropped, and while those tracks are highly notable, there is absolutely no drop off between the tracks chosen to lead the album as singles, and the rest of the joints on the album. Each track commands the listener to attention and draws you in from the heavy drums or the killer cuts or the choice of artist we get to hear over a SnowGoons banger. The usual suspects like Billy Danze, NEMS, Reef the Lost Cauze we KNOW sound brilliant and suit the sound, but it’s a guilty pleasure to be able to hear emcees like Ransom, Ty Farris, Spit Gemz, Napoleon Da Legend and Rasheed Chappell display their lyrical gifts and flow over this top tier beatmaking.

A big shoutout has to go to Lingo, Ayok and the rest of the Grind Mode crew. The ‘Grind Mode Cypher‘ track is a vicious posse cut and just goes to show the level that GME have reached with their work over the past few years. We always love supporting their grind – the cyphers, the shows etc but to have this track on such a dope album is well-deserved and we look forward to an upcoming GME / SnowGoons collaboration project!!!

Bangers: G.o.d, Survival Of The Illest, We Up, The 90’s Are Back Pt.3, The Renaissance Kings

Score: 10 / 10. If you can find a flaw with this album, you’re better than me. The production sticks true to the authentic Goons sound, but also crosses over to encapsulate the modern direction that boom bap is taking. Their choice of artists also shows growth and development and keeps the listener connected through all 13 tracks even after multiple play-throughs. This will be mentioned as an Album of the Year contender.
