RJ Payne Leatherface 3

It’s another in-your-face album chock full of hardcore beats and face melting rhymes as RJ Payne delivers another epic album with ‘Leatherface 3: There Will Be Blood‘. This joint doesn’t let up from start to finish and RJ Payne doesn’t just bring the knock out delivery, his pen is certainly still as sharp as anyone in the game right now. Embodying the Texas Chainsaw Massacre theme is right in the Philly emcee’s pocket as he punishes each track with brutal bars and uncompromising energy.

Payne has always commanding attention on the microphone just through his persona and enigmatic delivery, but alongside that, he has an arsenal of bars, clever / witty wordplay and a brazen confidence that few can commit to or who actually have the skills to back it up. But everything Payne touches, turns to flames and Leatherface 3 is yet another album in the discography that adds fuel to the fire. It’s twelve tracks, checks in at over 30 minutes of full-throttle bars and features some of the bravest and sharpest artists in the game right now. In short, Payne is peaking and he’s maximising his time in the booth.

Redman, JoJo Pellegrino, Ransom, Flee Lord, Ras Kass, Apathy, UFO Fev, Shyheim, Inspectah Deck – if you decide to join RJ Payne on a track or an album, then you have to really have bars and that feature lineup is one of the best on ANY album this year. These are SPITTERS who put in bar work and alongside Payne – your favourite rappers favourite rapper – we are witnessing greatness. There have been some epic ‘collab’ or various artist albums in 2021 (Empires, Accolades, Real Late etc), but they have a completely different feel to these specialised verses.

Dark, haunting, rugged, vivid….. we run out of adjectives when trying to describe what RJ Payne delivers, so we just stick with the basics. Dope. Production from Havoc, Stu Bangas, Vanderslice, Nick Craven etc gives the gritty, boom bap style production that is heavy and robust enough to stand up to the fierceness of Payne’s delivery. When you check for the key elements of a kick ass hip hop album – bars, beats, features, cohesiveness, replay value – it’s has a massive tick across the board.

Bangers: Infamous Payne, Blood Everywhere, 3 Headed Dragon, There Will Be Blood

Score: 10 / 10. I’ve spent weeks bumping this album in the ride, in the gym, at home. This album is fantastic from the jump and rides a hardcore wave all the way through – delivering some of the best and hardest bars of the year. This is made for repeat consumption in any setting. Not only does RJ Payne flat out slaughter each track, anyone who spits on this album, gives us their A game and I’m here for that – every time. Play it now, play it loud and appreciate greatness.
