Ransom This Life Made Me

Ransom decides to drop ‘This Life Made Me’ because he can drop whenever, and hip hop fans will be more than appreciative of the decision! (Not to mention those of us who try to cover as much as we can – not dropping on a Friday gives us more airspace!!!!) The six track offering is produced by Mayor and features only two other artists – 38 Spesh and Havoc which means we are getting plenty of bang for our buck from the talented lyricist. “Just a warmup for what’s to come TRUST” Ran posted on social media, and it certainly does serve as quite the 20 minute entree.

Pain Is Glory‘ is a beautifully produced, easy listening track that sits in the background and allows Ran to speak his truth effortlessly over the top with carefully crafted lyrics and his trademark conversational flow. It’s more boom, bap, dramatic production for ‘Ignorance‘ which allows the delivery of a plethora of bars and some of that ‘shit you like’ before ‘The Prophecy‘ hits the speakers with a more triumphant undertone and bars full of street poetry delivered with purpose.

Up next is ‘Last Gasp‘ with 38 Spesh and it’s a different vibe for this banger, more dramatic strings and bass create the soundscape with a vocal hook for good measure. Ran is in the zone as he just SPITS bars on this joint, before Spesh takes control on the second half of the joint and matches the tenacity of pen. ‘The World Is Yours‘ is an ANTHEM! Big drums, synths and neck snapping production gives Ran another banger as he continues to play his role as part story-teller, part street-poet. The EP closes with the dark, heavy, intricate ‘Purge Night‘ that makes the headphones rattle. Ran and Hav team up to give us a modern ‘Mobb Deep’ sounding joint that not only slaps, but takes you back to the 90’s cracked concrete corners.

After a trifecta of spins, this is a really solid project as we always espect when Ransom’s name is attached to it. For me, the standout track is ‘Purge Night’ because it gave me chills and I half expected to hear Prodigy grace the track at any time. Get this in rotation and enjoy a brilliant sample of dope hip hop…. until we get another full length project!
