Planet Asia DJ Jay-Ef

Fresh of an incredible album (Rule of Thirds), Planet Asia is back with another boom bap project that feels so ‘right’ for the heads who love that old school vibe, dusty drums and killer bars. DJ Jay-Ef teams up with PA for this release and the pairing works really well and is somewhat of a reunion having worked together a couple of decades ago, which clearly influences the sound. ‘Cash or Caskets’ highlights Planet Asia’s flow as he rides the soundscape delivered by Jay-Ef effortlessly and smoothly, even when bringing the bravado in his bars.

The skits tie this release together in somewhat of a concept-style album, which means you can press play on this bad boy and not have to worry about anything else until you hit repeat. The production while varied, really does lean towards more laid back, chilled out, sample-laced bangers which showcases PA’s vocals and lyrical delivery as well as a handful of features that, while not household names (JoJo Simmons, B-Dott, Diego Redd, Styliztik Jones, Allah Christ and Supreme Sam Jones), really bring the heat when given the mic. But for the most part, this is all about the marriage between PA and the DJ Jay-Ef production and as an ‘old head’ this sits right in my sweet spot and has been given multiple spins since it dropped a week or two back.

Don’t mistake the chilled production and laid back feel for ‘cruising’ on this album though. This is 11 tracks and over 30 minutes of really good hip hop. The album also builds throughout as it ebbs and flows through the more ethereal joints to the energised and enigmatic numbers. Album structure is a craft in itself and the ride from ‘Breaking News’ and ‘Superhero Shit’ to ‘Daily Bread’ is an audio journey worth taking.

Bangers: Superhero Shit, Air Max Julien, Ice Water, Cultural Warfare.

Score: 8 / 10. Fantastic joint that brings the essence of hip hop right to your headphones. Planet Asia is as sharp as ever, and DJ Jay-Ef produces the kind of hip hop that I love without sounding basic or monotonous. It’s an entertaining and engaging listen and has good replay value as we get to enjoy the bars and beats without ever sounding forced or mailed in. Definitely worth more than a listen, pop it on and journey with the duo on their boom bap journey!
