Peter Rosenberg Real Late

Mastering the art of the compilation album is a skill few possess. We think back to the ‘golden era’ where we had so many dope albums carefully curated and developed by Funkmaster Flex, DJ Clue, Tony Touch and others….. they were hotter than hot and a staple in true hip hop heads collections. Fast forward to 2021 and there are plenty of artists having collaborative projects with other emcees or producers, we’ve see a couple of dope soundtracks, but we haven’t had that same ‘compilation’ style joint in a minute. Until now.

If you recognise the name Peter Rosenberg, you’re most likely associating him with Hot 97’s Ebro in the Morning. Well, building from that, Rosenberg has just launched his Real Late label and his debut album of the same name. Now this is coming at just the right time. More than just Griselda, there is a really strong wave of underground artists making huge noise on the hip hop scene. We at Raw Side Hip Hop can’t even keep up with all the REAL, authentic, dope hip hop being created, so having a compilation with a host of cats who are straight SPITTIN is perfect.

The project is 13 tracks in length, and having already heard the ‘Marcus Smart‘ and ‘Stain‘ we knew that this was going to be some kind of album. The tracklist then includes some top flight names including Styles P, Ghostface Killah, Method Man, Raekwon, Ransom, Mayhem Lauren and more (as well as those featured on the singles – Stove God Cooks, Flee Lord and Westside Gunn). The talent is unquestionable and the bars they deliver are top tier which makes this release all the more authentic and exceptional.

Peter Rosenberg dropped a couple of mixtapes back a decade or so ago, and while they were pretty hot, it’s safe to say that with ‘Real Late’ he has taken this music thing to the next level. It’s not flawless, there are a couple of minor missteps, but all in all it’s a fantastic album and something for the hip hop heads to really bump for the long term. We’ve been craving a release like this. Better ‘Real Late‘ than never.

Bangers: S.R.D, Snake Eyes, Hallways, Marcus Smart, Next Chamber

Score: 9 / 10. It slaps. It’s been carefully curated and well put together, it features a host of dope artists who are really going all out and ripping the mic, and it has huge replay value. Even taking out the ‘nostalgia’ vote, this is a compilation / collaboration that really keeps hip hop evolving and exciting. I’m off to spin it again!
