Soul It May Seem

Soul It May Seem‘ was the third full length album drop from wordsmith Mayhem, and while ‘Audio Murals‘ with Reckonize Real and The SOULution pairing to create ‘Singleton With A Pen were both great hip hop albums, he may have saved the best for last when he dropped this joint. Produced entirely by Soulslicers, ‘Soul It May Seem‘ is a terrific album from start to finish with some really memorable moments. Let’s dive in.

Let’s start with the album structure. This really works for me because it hits a sweet spot for my personal taste which is around the 45 minute mark and 12 tracks. For me this represents a solid investment in time and the album repays that by not wasting any moments, no filler tracks and it’s meaty enough to sink your teeth into. There ARE a lot of features which can sometimes detract from a ‘solo’ joint, but in this case they are balanced, cohesive and bring added elements to each track and the album overall – so that works too. M-Dot, EDO. G, Big Shug, Skanks, Don Streat, The AbSouljah, Revalation and all others leave their mark when they spit.

The production is on point too. Soulslicers have done a great job of crafting the basis for a really solid album by bringing some thoughtful production that has good feeling and also slaps when it hits the speakers. No weak spots on the entire joint which is fantastic for the listener and for replay value. Drums, horns, keys, strings, scratches – the album production has it all and gets the head nodding which is a must for me in the age of ‘minimalist’ beats and lo-fi, ethereal soundscapes.

Lyrically, Mayhem has this honesty and authenticity around his pen. There’s no overt braggadocios elements, he doesn’t mess with simple punchlines, but rather crafts tales through his songs which keep you hooked. He doesn’t rhyme for the sake of it, but instead to say something and paint a picture with his wordplay and I enjoy dissecting it all after the initial experience.

Bangers: ParaStruggle, M.A.N.Y, Mafioso Lyrical, Fam Bizness

Score: 8.5 / 10. Yet another quality album from Mayhem who is inherently hip hop. The album flows well, the production is great and doesn’t outshine or undermine the lyrics and delivery so it’s a complete and balanced listen. Every time he drops, he gets better so looking forward to even more music from Mayhem in the future.
