Verbal Kent (of Ugly Heroes) and underground Ghana emcee Recognize Ali have put their chemistry to great use by releasing their debut collaborative album – the self titled ‘Dueling Experts’ and it’s one of the releases of the year so far. These two talented lyricists have often traded verbal barbs on the same track as featured artists, but this time they go one better and step toe to toe in the booth on a release that allows both mic rippers to shine.

Another standout of this project HAS to be Lord Beatjitzu and his impeccable production throughout. These grimy, basement sounding, sample heavy tracks deliver the perfect soundtrack for Kent and Ali to rhyme over. You can instantly tell the Wu Tang influence through the tape cassette noises, the boom bap, the horns, the Bruce Lee inspired soundbites…. it transports you back to the 90’s while giving a really fresh flavour.

The next point of note is the flow of the album. It’s a fantastic journey and seamless listen from start to finish, with the ‘skits’ each having their place and not feeling awkward. At just over 30 minutes, it easily digestable too, but to a boom bap hip hop head like me, I could have easily listened to another 3 or 4 tracks. In saying that, quality over quantity – and it’s a pretty perfect album as is.

Bangers: The Dueling Experts, Dark Ninjas, Two Isn’t Enough, Stones in a Glass House

Score: 9 / 10. This is such a complete album and the old school sound with new school spitting is just a match made in heaven and a fantastic release for the modern hip hop scene. The underground is coming and it’s albums like these that make it so hard to ignore.
