14 Trapdoors - Eileen

Undoubtedly, when you hear the phrase ‘dope emcees from Buffalo, New York’ you’re going to immediately reel off the names of the Griselda crew – and with good reason – they make killer hip hop. BUT, it’s about time you caught up with 14 Trapdoors, another trio reppin’ Buffalo, NY. Short Moscato, Bendyface & Wza have been putting in WORK over the past 18 months, and with a couple of projects already delivered in 2020, their latest joint – a collaboration with Camoflague Monk – title ‘Eileen‘ is going to put them right into your playlists.

This is top tier, East Coast, raw AF boom bap. Monk totally crushed the production on this joint, paying homage to the iconic East Coast boom bap sound, but also injecting some new age grime and funk which really suits 14 Trapdoors who all have a very individual, unique flow and delivery. The first track ‘Curbside Pickup’ is a scintillating opening jawn and Smoke DZA comes through with a flaming hot 16. DZA isn’t the only dope feature on the project either. Benny the Butcher pops up on ‘I Did It All‘ while Skyzoo delivers his perspective on the joint ‘Hypothesis‘. Che Noir raps her a** off (as she always does) on ‘Orion’s Belt‘ and then the final track is the masterfully soulful and eerie ‘Means to the End‘ featuring Royce the 5’9″, Boldy James and Billie Essco (which also has a ‘24 hrs to Live‘ vibe – one of THE dopest cuts from Mase’s Harlem World album).

Eileen is 10 tracks (one interlude) and each song is a nice little journey in and of itself, but they all culminate in a really well composed album. The lyrics are on point, the production is dope, authentic and varied without feeling disjointed and the whole thing is held together by the 14 Trapdoors emcees themselves. This album punches well above its weight and should put 14 Trapdoors on the radar of all real hip hop heads.

Bangers: Means to the End, Curbside Pickup, I Did it All, Hypothesis, Most of the Time.

Score: 8 / 10. A really solid joint and an enjoyable listen. The subject matter is creative, flamboyant, honest… and all comes together like a brilliant musical gumbo. Mixes the East Coast boom bap with some Jurassic 5 style Cali funk – and it works.
