Clansman Chef who has just turned 50 (if you can believe that) has followed Redman’s lead and given hip hop heads, three new tracks of pure fire to kick off 2020. Perhaps 3 is the new 7 when it comes to EP’s and releases in 2020 after we saw a plethora of joints with ‘lucky’ seven songs on them for the past couple of years.
Anyway, the fact is we get three new tracks from Rae – ‘Solid Gold’, ‘Chef It Up’ and ‘Shells Kitchen’ and let me break these down for you real quick.
‘Solid Gold’ is an easy listening, laid back, sing songy tune that you can just vibe with. Rae spits quality, the hook is catchy R&B style and it makes for a different yet decent track. Ladies will love it and the guys can have it on in the crib when trying to ‘chilll’. Next up is ‘Chef It Up’ and this is what I’m talking about! Grimey beat, slick story-telling – this is Chef in his element and at his finest. Rae still chef’s it up alright – this is a BANGER. Finally, ‘Shells Kitchen’ continues the street tale trend. Another hard hitting beat that allows Rae to sit in that pocket of dart spitting and painting verbal pictures and the result is perfect.
All in all, this is fantastic. The ‘EP’ was made in Red Bull studios (which Rae alludes to on the final track) and there is apparently a documentary that will come out alongside this to talk about the making of the music. This was a taste, a sample and it had me wanting more. Like a true Chef, Rae has given us a delightful entree that has us craving another main course.
