Mickey Diamond - Noir

Here is a punch you in the face, seven track project from Mickey Diamond x Mark Dark that will take you to some dark places in those headphones! ‘Noir‘ checks in at just over 21 minutes, but each and every second is hardbody hip hop, attention commanding, stankface enforcing, dope AF hip hop. ‘Deathwish‘ gave me such Scarface vibes, I had to make sure I had the right album playing. Mickey Diamonds brought the bars on that one and Mark Dark created a harrowing and moody audio canvas – a quality introduction to the pairing and the project.

Tommy Brown‘ is a little lighter, using some well placed horns to give the track a jazzy edge and pop a velvet glove (or oven mitt) over the sledgehammer that is Mickey Diamonds delivery. Maze Overlay joins the duo for ‘Palazzi‘ which has that mafioso vibe and ‘Hattori Hanzo‘ slaps you over the head with a broadsword from the triumphantly challenging production to the bar work delivered from Diamonds and fellow Umbrella member Josiah the Gift.

Melodic and moody, ‘Ski Patch Killers‘ might be a change of pace but the intensity of the flow from Mickey and Allah Preme ensures the pressure stays on high with some ferocious lines delivered with zero empathy. ‘Calendars‘ pairs Pro Dillinger with Mickey & Mark and the soundtrack may feel like it’s lounge music infused, but the bars are anything but! Finally, ‘Givenchy Rottweiler‘ brings the feeling of the album together in a cohesively crafted track featuring Snotty and Big Trip. The production pulls together the darkness, the vibrancy and the ‘noir’ aura which allows for the emcees to spit deliberate and forceful narratives with great effect.

It’s a short listen, but ‘Noir’ packs some serious heat and dark energy into the 20 odd minutes. Get this into the rotation and I promise you won’t be disappointed. In fact, you may just head over to Bandcamp, cop this joint, pop it on repeat for the day and immerse yourself in the murky world of Mickey Diamonds and Mark Dark.
