Raw Side Hip Hop as you know is about the underdog, the little guy, the indie artists or the REAL hip hop that lives and thrives in the underground. We regularly put the call out to hit us up with some new music, to share your work or promote a homie etc. Well, lucky enough MC Johnny Wae sent through a link to the Apollo Suns EP and I gave it a spin (multiple spins actually) because it’s damn good!

Let me start by introducing Apollo Suns who are an MC / Hip Hop duo from Connecticut, consisting of MC Johnny Wae & High Deph. The MCC (My Country’s Corrupt) EP is a four track offering and each track is hot.

The Storm‘ is a funky / soul infused, high energy hip hop track with clever wordplay and use of metaphors. It’s fun and funky and both emcees flow effortlessly over it with compelling delivery. The anthem style nature of the chorus had me hooked! Next up, ‘Seein Ghosts‘ is a change of pace with a more haunting soundtrack, but it’s a brilliant smoking joint where you can just kick back an enjoy the ‘golden rhymes’.

The next joint (which has a hella funny – and unfortunately too true – intro skit) ‘Chasing After Money‘ we hear MC Johnny Wae & High Deph deliver an introspective tale of the pitfalls and problems of indie hip hop artists, but the quest to stay true to themselves. Finally, the EP concludes with ‘Children of the Sun‘, another boom bap track, with some solid string music infused. It’s a great way to come full circle on the release, once again showcasing that social commentary and on-point lyrical ability and flow.

I must recommend giving this joint a spin. It’s what hip hop is all about for me, from the digging (well, in this case it was done for me!) to the message, the entire sound and message, it’s bang on.
